Permanent Market Shelters Project to be a Reality!

On August 3rd, 2010, Carnation City Council voted to approve the design and use agreement with the Sno-Valley Tilth, operators of the Carnation Farmers Market, for the creation of permanent market shelters. This structure will also serve as a 'Community Shelter' for the entire community to use for picnics, cultural and community events throughout the year.  This is a partnership between the City and the Sno-Valley Tilth and serves as a model for future public/ non-profit organization partnerships, building on the strengths each can bring to such projects.

Permanent market shelters in other communities such as Bellingham and Vashon Island have shown that this type of infrastructure can help vitalize and attract people to their communities, while helping to build stronger food systems with the potential for year round access to local healthy foods. Community shelters for picnics and special events help to create strong communities.

We are proud to be a part of a positive vision for the future of Carnation and to be able to help bring this new project to the community during these economic times. Funding has been provided by USDA Rural Economic Funds for the new jobs and businesses that extended market seasons can offer, King County in support of agricultural infrastructure, and from cash and in-kind donations from the Sno-Valley Tilth, City of Carnation and the community. We will continue to seek contributions for future phases of the project.

These shelters are targeted for completion in the Fall of 2010! They will be located on the vacant city owned lot bordering the current market location just south of Bird Street, kitty corner to Hockert Park and Tolt Commons. This site is part of a greater vision for creating a vital town center at Tolt Commons, a unique opportunity for our town.

Volunteer work parties will be occurring throughout construction for preparing the timbers harvested and milled locally, 'barn-raising' events, landscaping and more! Let us know if you'd like to help out!
